After a few missed turns and a near wrong way through a round-a-bout, we finally made it to our B&B in Portrush. The sign said private parking, but it wasnt clear where, so Eric ran in for us. We circled around.. the gigantic block... and finally made it back to him. He tossed us the directions and said for us to go. When we finally figured it out, we took a couple of lefts, and then found this crazy little parking area buried among buildings, with some pretty crazy concrete turns. Dennis managed to park, and I went in to make sure they had rooms for us. They did, and we hauled our stuff up the stairs into our rooms.
As it was about mid afternoon, and we were all not yet hungry from our late lunch, we decided to head to the Springhill Bar across the street and grab a few pints, and then go for a walk. Interestingly enough, when we got to the bar, I tried to order something other than beer... I first asked if they did anything like a flavored martini or a cosmo, and the guy brought over a bottle of Martini & Rossi vermouth and asked if thats what I meant. I said no, and tried to ask about the sour apple whatever it was behind the bar, he said it was just something they did for shots. Then I tried to explain how to make a cosmo.. do you have cranberry juice? how about vodka? How about triple sec? Nope.. no triple sec.. any orange liquor? no not orange soda...::sigh:: just give me a cranberry and vodka... Dennis & Eric were perfectly fine with their pints of Guinness. The place was definitely an authentic Irish Pub, from those who ran it, to the Irish music I can now hear from the guest room. Eric had to go find an ATM to get some pounds, and we headed out for a walk on the beach from there. Here are some photos from the rocky part of the beach.
After a while, we figured it was time to head back and we took the scenic route...
Read the sign closely... On this site in 1897 NOTHING HAPPENED! What a great sense of humor (especially for living in house #13!!)
We decided to try the little Italian place right across from our B&B, called DG's Brasserie. Eric won, his chicken pasta with grilled vegetables was amazing. My red sauce pasta with pesto, procuitto & mushrooms was very good, but I think I could have eaten 5 plates of Eric's! My dad wasn't impressed with his spaghetti & meatballs, too plain for his liking, but Dennis's Procuitto wrapped chicken was good.
Profiteroles that were actually cream puffs with strawberry ice cream, and a decent Tiramisu, and we were stuffed for the night. We considered hitting up the bar upstairs, but we quickly realized although it was as bright as 7:30pm at home, it was actually 10pm already!! Time to read, put on PJs and head for bed!! I might go run on the beach in the morning, though we will see if sleep overwhelms me first!
Note to Kim: try Jameson and Ginger Ale. It's much easier to procure in traditional pubs. OR try a hot Jameson (hot water + Jameson + sugar).
